Mahalapye Sub District is located within Central District. Mahalapye is the headquarters of the sub district. It is the largest settlement in the sub district accounting to 36% of the sub district population. Mahalapye Sub District covers a land area of16507km2, being the largest sub district in Central district, with a population of 118 875 (CSO 2011). The sub district is bordered by both Palapye Administration Authority and Serowe administration Authority on the northern side, Kweneng District Council on the western side, Kgatleng district on the southern side and Republic of South Africa to east. The sub district has good communication linkages as is traversed by both the national rail way and the national primary road (A1).The A1 connects major centers in the northern (City of Francistown) and Gaborone the southern part of Botswana. The B145 and B146 secondary road provides connectivity within the sub district, connecting the western (Kalamare and Shoshong localities) and the eastern parts of the sub district. Mahalapye sub district falls within the eastern planning area of Botswana.


Like other Councils, Mahalapye Sub District is mandated with provision of services at Local level. This authority is composed of two organs the being the elected political leadership and support staff. Administratively, the Sub district is headed by Senior Assistant Council Secretary Mr. Godimo Garegope and politically by Sub Council Chairman Tassman J. Cebani. There are 36 councilors and 28 Heads of Departments and Sectional Heads who make the Mahalapye Sub District Sub Management Team. Mahalapye Sub district is constituted by 3 subordinate Land Boards being Mahalapye, Sefhare and Shoshong Sub Land Boards.
